Tavira town, East Algarve
Tavira, 6km from Cabanas, is arguably the Algarve's most picturesque town. You can wander around this traditional Portuguese town with ease, stopping at one of the many cafés and restaurants. Children are welcome in all Portuguese cafés.
The River Gilão runs through Tavira and you can reach either side via the Roman bridge. It's a delightful place to be, full of charm, cobbled streets, and river views.
A cultural, historical, and tourist centre, Tavira has a Moorish castle, a museum and art gallery, and a redeveloped market selling local craft. If you would like to know more about Tavira, there are organised tours.
Tavira has a beach too - Ilha de Tavira (Tavira Island). Just hop on one of the regular ferry boats at Quatro Aguas, a short drive from Tavira town. There’s parking.
Buses run from Tavira to Cabanas and back each day, if you prefer not to drive. Or take a train ride into Faro, or over to Vila Real de Santo Antonio on the Spanish border for lunch by the waters.
Pego do Inferno waterfall, East Algarve
Fancy a dip in the blue-green waters beneath a beautiful, natural waterfall? Pego do Inferno is a green and lush setting ideal for a swim and a picnic - and there’s shade too. Pego do Inferno is approximately 9 km drive from Cabanas, then a short walk from the parking spots there - really worth a visit.
Ria Formosa natural park, Algarve
The Ria Formosa natural park stretches from Faro to Cabanas de Tavira and beyond, blessing the East Algarve with long, sandy beaches and the natural beauty of the Ria Formosa reserve.
Ria Formosa is a stop off for many species of migratory birds during spring and autumn and a breeding ground for local wildlife. It's a great place for bird watching and walking, and is home to rare, protected species of birds.
The island beaches of Cabanas and Tavira are just across the Ria Formosa or you can enjoy a tour of the river – you’ll love the views and the colours at sun set. A real taste of East Algarve.
